CMS is a biodegradable anionic polymer material. It appears as a white or slightly yellowish solid powder, is hygroscopic, non-toxic, odorless and can be directly dissolved in cold water. It possesses the inherent properties of carboxyl groups, such as chelation, ion exchange and the flocculation effect of polycations. Its solution has excellent thickening, emulsifying, gelatinizing, water-absorbing, adhesive, film-forming, anti-lipid and anti-fouling properties, and the anti-redeposition effect is obvious. CMS can be metabolized by living organisms, has no toxic side effects, and is safe and convenient to use. The various excellent properties of CMS determine that it has extremely wide applications and can replace carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).
