Hydroxyethylmethylcellulose (HEMC) is widely used in water-based latex coatings, construction and building materials, printing inks, petroleum drilling, and other fields, serving as a thickener and water retention agent, enhancing workability, and finding application in dry and wet mortar series products; it is a white fibrous or granular powder, odorless, with the H model soluble in both cold and hot water while the L model only soluble in hot water, insoluble in most organic solvents, surface-treated HEMC disperses uniformly without agglomeration in cold water with slow dissolution yet rapid dissolution when the pH is adjusted to 8-10, and its viscosity varies slightly within the pH range of 2-12 but decreases beyond this range.
